What is Sphagnum Moss? Sphagnum is a genus of approximately 380 species of mosses, commonly known as peat moss. Why is Sphagnum moss important? What does Sphagnum moss look like? Sphagnum moss grows in dense, spongy mats. It consists of a slender stem with clusters of branches that are covered in tiny, overlapping green leaves. How does it store water? The leaves contain two types of cells: small, living green cells (chlorophyllose cells) that perform photosynthesis, and large, dead, clear cells (hyaline cells) that act as water-storage barrels.
