Native to wet savannas of the American South, it is famous for its tall, vertical, trumpet-shaped leaves that trap insects. Why is it carnivorous? It grows in nitrogen-poor, acidic peat bogs, using passive pitfall traps to digest insects for nutrients.

They enter dormancy in winter, shedding their pitchers and living as flat leaves (phyllodia). They live for 20 to 30 years.

Sarracenia flava is classified as Least Concern, but wild populations have declined by 97% since European settlement. Primary threats include habitat destruction (draining wetlands for agriculture and forestry), fire suppression (which allows woody shrubs to shade them out), and poaching. Prescribed burning is used to conserve wild bogs.
