What is the Lace Aloe? The lace aloe (Aloe aristata, or Aristaloe aristata) is a small succulent plant in the Asphodelaceae family. Native to the mountain ranges of South Africa, it is famous for its compact rosette of leaves lined with white, lace-like teeth and long threads at the tips. Unlike tropical aloes, the lace aloe is cold-hardy, adapted to high-altitude mountain winters.

Physical Appearance & Anatomy

What does a lace aloe look like? The plant grows in a small, dense, stemless rosette of up to 100 leaves. The leaves are lance-shaped, fleshy, dark green, and covered in small, white, raised spots. Why is it called 'lace' aloe? The margins of the leaves are lined with fine white teeth, and each leaf ends in a long, white, thread-like bristle (arista). In summer, it produces tall flower spikes with tubular orange-red flowers.
